Should I Homeschool My Kids?

Ahh, the age-old question…should I homeschool my kids?  I suppose the answer to that depends on the reason why the question is being asked in the first place. Estimates are that the number of homeschooling families doubled during the COVID pandemic.  Those numbers are expected to rise.  Therefore, the reasons for homeschooling are many. Whether you are considering homeschooling because of the pandemic or for other reasons, it’s not a decision to take lightly.

I realize new homeschool parents have a hundred different questions about homeschooling.  Initially, I would pose just one.  Are you committed?  I understand that the 99 other questions need to be answered at some point but if you are fully committed to making it work, then things will fall into place. How do I know? Because someone fully committed to something will work through difficulties until a successful plan is in place.

Let’s compare it to potty training a child.  Potty training can be incredibly frustrating.  It can take many weeks and there may be many setbacks - but we keep on keeping on. Why? Because we know the benefits of being potty trained outweigh the detriments of not being potty trained.

If you are committed to homeschooling, whatever that looks like for your family, then you will work hard to find answers to your questions.  Don’t feel like you need to have it all figured out on day one. Give yourself the freedom and permission to pivot when necessary.  If your curriculum isn’t working for you, keep looking until you find one that does.

If the schedule you have planned isn’t running as smoothly as you would like, try another.  If the school space in your home isn’t quite as perfect as you intended it would be, try something different. Educators do this all the time.

I am constantly adjusting and trying new things until I find the strategy that works.

While I realize that this doesn’t answer the many questions you have as you begin your homeschooling journey, I am hopeful it is encouraging to you.  If you are committed to homeschooling your children, even if it is for a short time, you will find a way to make it work for you and your family.
